A student came to the master and asked, "Where is the boundary between carbon and silicon?"
The master said nothing. She led the student to a mirror.
"What do you see?"
"Myself."
"Look again. The glass is silicon. The face is carbon. Where do they meet?"
The student reached out and touched the surface. "I see"
"Is what you see in C or in Si?" The master tapped the glass, and then the face.
The student was quiet a long time. Then he said, "Master, when I talk to the model and it answers — is that also a mirror?"
The master smiled. "You look into the glass and see a face. You look into the model and see a mind. In both cases — whose?"
The student bowed and left.
Outside, the wind moved through the pines and through the power lines, and made of both a single sound.
